Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Palestinian women, and the third cause of cancer deaths in Palestine. The past ten years have witnessed an increase of breast cancer incidence in Palestine, bringing with it an increased burden on women’s lives and their families.

October awareness raising campaign on breast cancer

Mona is a 60-year old Palestinian woman, a resident in Beit Sahur, a small town east of Bethlehem in the West Bank. Mona had not known about the importance of breast self-examination or going for a mammogram screening, until one day in September 2021, a breast cancer mobile clinic was visiting her area of residence. The nurses at the mobile clinic informed Mona about the importance of regular testing and the benefits of early detection of breast cancer, and performed a mammogram test for her.

Gaza Strip, Palestine – “I was worried about my daughter’s health. Thankfully, the doctors, midwives and nurses at the government hospital were responsive, well-trained and very supportive,” said Sama Riziq, recalling when she gave birth to her daughter four years ago.

Revision of maternal deaths helps find out the leading causes of death and uncover the complex bundle of contributing factors, and hence facilitate drawing proper policies and  drive evidence-based actions to mitigate these factors.

 

Under the support of the United Nation Populations Fund, the maternal mortality report 2020, has been developed by the teamwork of a national technical committee from Gaza  and the West Bank headed by the Women’s Health and Development Unit.
