Child Marriage in Palestine
Two out of every ten women aged 20-49 were married before the age of 18 in the West Bank and this number increases to three out of ten women for the Gaza Strip based on PCBS data from 2014. Cases have been detected where girls and boys were as young as 12 years when entering into marriage. When comparing the 2014 data with the 2010, a decrease can be identified for Palestine as a whole, but also when looking separately at West Bank and Gaza Strip. This decrease is however misleading as pockets within both the West Bank as well as Gaza Strip have experienced an increase thereby leaving communities behind the national trend.
Mapping Interventions Preventing and Responding to Gender Based Violence in oPt
The Gender Based Violence Working Group (GBV-WG), chaired by UNFPA, has undertaken two mapping activities of GBV interventions in Palestine in the years 2013 and 2014. Both mapping reports informed the UNCT Gender Task Force and provided data on the overall GBV work, without distinction between development and humanitarian interventions. In 2015, the GBV working group evolved to operate as one of the humanitarian working groups of the Protection Cluster and assumed the responsibility to report on humanitarian GBV services with clear distinction from development interventions. The current mapping report will compile an updated data on both types of GBV interventions with clear distinction between them and will provide observations on results, identifying gaps and challenges and offer recommendations to the GBV-WG and GBV service providers for future action. At 10, a girl arrives at a vulnerable point in her life. She must negotiate a tricky transition to adulthood, with its rapid changes in body and brain, and dramatic shifts in family and social expectations. Although risks abound for both girls and boys, gender discrimination makes these worse for girls in almost every way. Public policies often focus on young children or older adolescents, failing to adequately manage the potential risks 10-year-old girls might face.
If her rights are not well protected, through appropriate laws, services and investments, the chance to bloom in adolescence and become a fully fledged adult forever slips away.
The world has already done well in many ways for the 10-year-old boy. It is past time to do equally well for the 10-year-old girl.
