Success Story in oPt
Anta Wa Anti: First Television Show to Exclusively Discuss Gender
on the National Palestine Satellite Television
As part of the Media and Advocacy plan of the Millennium Development Goals Joint Programme on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment (MDG-TF GEWE) in the oPt, UNFPA produced a Television talk show in partnership with the second most watched Satellite station locally, Palestine TV named “Anta wa Anti”. The first episode of the show aired on April 15th 2012. The show directs messages from the MDG-TF GEWE to various influential and marginalized groups of society; to promote gender equality and advocate for increasing women’s participation in decision making bodies, combating Gender Based Violence and enhancing women’s economic participation in the oPt and contributing to UNFPA SP outcome 5.
Each episode had a special focus on different issues that touch on gender inequality in both the public and private spheres of society, and focused on diversifying the discussion to draw a picture of women and men as partners in every aspect of social, economic and political life. The show included field reports, animation, studio guests, and two stories from society. The topics ranged from women in the labor market to the notion of masculinity and the image of women in the Palestinian curriculum, Women’s rights in the judicial system, Early marriage and choice of spouses, and other intriguing topics.
Overall, 13 episodes were broadcasted, hosted 38 guests, including Ministers, Head of different NGOs and UN agencies, doctors, religious leaders and activists.
A special success was after the broadcast of the episode on (Women Participation
in the Labor Market), the Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad called for a meeting with the Head of General Union of Palestinian Workers, Mr Shaher Saad, who was one of the guest speakers in the mentioned episode.
In the episode, Mr. Shaher Saad brought to the table issues of women receiving wages that are unacceptable, and demanded the government to raise minimum wages, which entails protection for all citizens, especially marginalized women. The meeting resulted in a decision from the Prime Minister to seriously review minimum wages and issue a policy on this issue in the weeks that followed. We hope to continue this show in the next season after Ramadan.
