Jerusalem –This week UN agencies are raising awareness on youth and mental health under the theme “Mental Health Matters”. Mental health is how we think, feel and act when facing life’s situations. An essential component of this is being able to realize one’s potential, cope with the stresses of life, build healthy relationships, work productively and participate fully in society. Yet, the mental health of young people is largely ignored and, as a result, depression is the largest cause of disability, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death among young people worldwide.

Youth comprise one third of the Palestinian population. Their mental health is affected due to the occupation, stress, insecurity, limited access to health and recreational facilities, and unemployment

“Mental health matters” said Mr. James W. Rawley, UN Resident Coordinator. “The United Nations is working to ensure that adolescents and youth have the knowledge, access, skills and services to enable them to exercise their rights, understand their bodies, and make informed decisions about their health and well-being. We are also making sure young people’s voices and priorities are incorporated in development plans and policies. ” he continued.

This year’s theme of mental health is even more relevant due to the recent conflict in Gaza, which has had a significant impact on the mental well-being of youth. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 360,000 people – 20% of Gaza’s population, the majority being youth – are suffering a range of mental health challenges.  And this is not the first time youth have experienced conflict and humanitarian emergencies in Gaza. A child under 7 years of age has experienced three major conflicts. UN agencies are implementing psycho-social support activities to help youth cope with mental health issues arising from this summer’s violent and devastating conflict.

To promote a greater understanding on mental health issues among youth in Palestine, a number of UN agencies are launching a campaign that includes a series of joint activities throughout the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) from the 14th until the 21st of October.
