The occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) is facing a protracted political crisis, marked by 55 years of Israeli military occupation, lack of adherence to international humanitarian and human rights law, economic crisis, falling aid inflows, and recurrent hostilities. The humanitarian situation has further deteriorated in 2022 due to the escalation in Gaza and a volatile security environment, leading to chronic protection concerns and humanitarian needs. An estimated 2.1 million Palestinians require humanitarian assistance, with vulnerabilities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and related mobility restrictions. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable, with limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care services and increased risks of gender-based violence (GBV). Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) needs are also rising, with limited economic opportunities and livelihood activities increasing the risk of negative coping mechanisms and GBV.
In response to 2023 unmet sexual and reproductive health and protection needs, UNFPA has identified eight humanitarian projects. These projects form a multifaceted and integrated response targeting the needs within SRH, GBV, and for adolescents and youth. By providing a comprehensive approach to addressing these critical issues, UNFPA is working to create a safer, healthier, and more fulfilling future for all Palestinians.
