Women and Girls with Disabilities

This study on GBV among women and girls with disabilities was conducted by UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund) with the support of Denmark in the context of the GBV Sub-Cluster Strategy 2018-2020. It was based on a needs analysis and mapping of services offered to women and girls with disabilities aged 15 and older who are survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, particularly in view of the poor protection, care and social services available to women survivors of violence.

2019 Reprint: Pathway to Survival - the Story of Breast Cancer in Palestine

Throughout the last seventeen years, Palestinians have been experiencing a remarkable increase in cancer cases that doubled from 1,073 cases in 2000 to reach 2536 cases in 2016 in the West Bank alone. The year 2016 witnessed an increase of 5.8% in cancer cases in comparison with 2015, and cancer was the second leading cause of mortality as 14% of mortality cases were caused by cancer, after cardiovascular diseases (30.6%). Worldwide, breast cancer kills a woman every 15 minutes. In Palestine, breast cancer affecting Palestinian women represents 15% of cancer cases.

State of World Population Report

This year’s State of the World Population (SWOP) report comes at the 50th anniversary of the creation of UNFPA, the UN agency for sexual and reproductive health, and the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). The report analyzes the progress the world has made regarding the promises of the ICPD including putting individuals in charge of their own reproductive decisions and empowering women and girls as a precondition for development. The report also identifies areas of improvement and tells stories of women who lived through the transformative decades since the promises of the ICDP were first made.

Youth Friendly Health Services Palestine Feasibility Study

Publication

UNFPA in Palestine, in partnership with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, is focusing on strengthening reproductive health and rights for Palestinian youth. This cooperation has included the establishment of two YFHS centers, launched at the beginning of 2018 at Al-Azhar University, and in October 2018 at Al-Quds University, in  collaboration with Palestinian Medical Relief Society. The purpose of this feasibility study is to assess opportunities to scale up, expand and improve such services to ensure the provision of more youth-friendly health services in preferred delivery points throughout oPt.

Impact of the ‘Great March of Return’ on Gender-based Violence

Publication

The humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate. Since 30 March 2018, the Gaza Strip has been tense with weekly demonstrations held by Palestinians beside Israel’s perimeter fence as part of the ‘Great March of Return’. As of 8 June 2018, 101 Palestinians were killed in the context of the demonstrations, including 13 children and more than 13,000 were injured. Other 34 Palestinians were killed during the same period in contexts other than demonstrations. The large number of casualties is expected to increase the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) of the women impacted.
